Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery Costs by Country

A short operation with a long tail: how the extent of surgery, workup, calcium checks and lifelong follow-up decide what thyroid surgery really costs, wherever you have it.

Thyroid surgery is a fairly short operation with a short hospital stay. That makes it look like an easy candidate for comparing prices across countries. In practice, a good comparison depends on things a headline price leaves out: how much of the gland is removed, why, what pre-operative workup comes with it, who monitors your calcium and voice afterwards, and who manages your hormone levels for years. This guide explains how thyroid and parathyroid surgery is priced, so you can compare quotes from any country on the same terms.

Key takeaways

Three operations, three quotes

MedlinePlus describes thyroid removal as either total, removing the whole gland, or subtotal or partial, removing part of it. A total thyroidectomy takes about two to three hours and a partial one less. Both are usually done under general anesthesia (MedlinePlus, reviewed 2026). Removing one lobe, often called a hemithyroidectomy or lobectomy, is a common partial operation.

Parathyroid surgery is a different operation, on the small glands next to the thyroid that control calcium. Its cost depends a lot on the imaging done beforehand to find the overactive gland, so check whether that imaging is part of the quote or done earlier at home.

MedlinePlus lists the reasons for thyroid surgery as small nodules or cysts, a dangerously overactive thyroid, thyroid cancer, non-cancerous growths causing symptoms, and goiters that make breathing or swallowing difficult. The reason matters for cost because it decides what happens after the operation.

Why this page has no price-by-country table

We haven't found official, like-for-like price data for thyroidectomy across the US and the usual medical-travel destinations. Published figures mix hospital charges with cash prices, include or leave out pathology and the overnight stay, and seldom say how much of the gland was removed. Rather than print ranges we can't stand behind, this guide gives you a scope list to send every hospital you're considering, at home or abroad.

What should be in a thyroid surgery quote

LINE 01

Workup

Ultrasound, fine-needle biopsy results, thyroid blood tests. For parathyroid disease, localization imaging. Note whether you'll bring results or the hospital repeats the tests.

LINE 02

Surgeon and specialty

Endocrine surgeons and head-and-neck/ENT surgeons both do this operation. Ask which one, and how many thyroid operations they do a year.

LINE 03

Anesthesia

Usually general anesthesia. Confirm the anesthesia fee is in the total and not billed separately.

LINE 04

Facility and night

Same-day discharge or one night. Ask what an unplanned extra night would cost.

LINE 05

Pathology

Lab examination of the removed tissue. It confirms the diagnosis and can change the follow-up plan.

LINE 06

Calcium and voice checks

Blood calcium checks after surgery, more often after total removal, and any voice assessment if you have symptoms.

LINE 07

Nerve monitoring

Some surgeons monitor the voice-box nerves during surgery. Ask whether this is used and whether it's priced separately.

LINE 08

Follow-up

The first post-operative visit, the pathology review, and the first hormone-level check after a total thyroidectomy.

For a US quote, these lines often come from separate providers, each sending its own bill. Use the list above to find out which bills to expect, and ask for each one before the operation rather than after.

The risks that become costs

MedlinePlus names the complications specific to thyroid surgery: injury to the nerves of the vocal cords, bleeding with possible airway obstruction, a temporary rise in thyroid hormone around the time of surgery, and injury to the parathyroid glands or their blood supply. That last one can cause low blood calcium. Each of these can add tests, medication, an extra night or specialist visits.

When you compare quotes, ask each hospital what happens if your calcium is low after surgery or your voice changes. Who monitors it, is it inside the package, and what if it shows up after you've flown home? A cheaper quote with no plan for these is cheaper only if nothing goes wrong.

Benign disease vs cancer: where travel makes sense

Thyroid cancer means a long-term care plan, not just one operation. For a cancer diagnosis, the operation is followed by pathology review, hormone management and a surveillance schedule that runs for years and is set by your treating team. If you're thinking about surgery abroad, involve the team that made the diagnosis, and confirm that a home endocrinologist will take over follow-up before you book. Our cancer treatment cost comparison explains why continuity of care matters for cost.

For benign disease, such as a goiter causing symptoms or nodules the surgeon recommends removing, the plan is simpler: workup, operation, a short stay, calcium checks and a clear recovery period. Most of the cost happens in a few weeks. That makes price comparison straightforward, as long as both quotes cover the same lines.

Travel timing

MedlinePlus says most patients go home the same day or the day after surgery. Rarely, the stay is up to three days, and you need to be able to swallow liquids before leaving. Full recovery takes about four to six weeks. CDC's medical tourism guidance gives a specific no-fly period for chest and abdominal surgery, and the plastic surgeons' society gives one for some facial procedures. Neither covers neck surgery, so ask your surgeon when you can fly and plan your stay around that (CDC Yellow Book, 2026).

CDC also advises getting your overseas medical records in English and sharing them with clinicians at home. For thyroid surgery that means the operative note, the pathology report and your calcium results, which your home doctor will need to manage hormone replacement and follow-up.

Compare the total against what you would actually pay at home: your deductible and coinsurance if insured, or a written self-pay estimate if not. Don't compare against a hospital's list price.

Paying a foreign hospital

If the hospital accepts international transfers, compare the exchange rate and fees against paying by card before you send a deposit. We use Wise for this and receive a small referral commission if you open an account through that link, at no cost to you. Whichever way you pay, confirm the currency of the quote and when it expires.

Where Colombia fits

In Colombia, thyroid surgery is mainly done in large private hospitals, by endocrine surgeons or head-and-neck surgeons. When you request a quote, ask for the eight lines above, which specialty the surgeon belongs to, how many thyroid operations they do a year, whether nerve monitoring is used, and how calcium will be monitored before you're cleared to fly. For other neck and throat procedures, see ENT surgery costs by country.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the hospital stay after thyroid surgery?

MedlinePlus says most patients go home the same day or the day after surgery, and rarely stay up to three days. You need to be able to swallow liquids before discharge. Full recovery takes about four to six weeks.

Will I need medication after thyroid surgery?

After a total thyroidectomy, most people need thyroid hormone pills for the rest of their lives, according to MedlinePlus. That means ongoing visits and lab tests with a home doctor, whatever country does the operation.

What should a thyroid surgery quote include?

Workup, surgeon, anesthesia, facility and any overnight stay, pathology, calcium checks, nerve monitoring if used, and the first follow-up. Confirm each line is included or priced, and what an extra night would cost.

When can I fly home after thyroid surgery?

CDC's no-fly guidance covers chest, abdominal and some facial procedures, not neck surgery, so ask your surgeon. Plan to stay until your surgeon has checked your wound, calcium levels and swallowing, and clears you to fly.

Is thyroid cancer surgery a good candidate for travel?

The operation may be, but cancer care continues for years with pathology review, hormone management and surveillance set by your treating team. Involve the team that made the diagnosis, and confirm home follow-up, before booking abroad.
