The US benchmark and what it leaves out
The most useful public reference for US cosmetic surgery prices is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2024 average-cost report. It gives surgeon/physician fees as ranges. ASPS describes them as an aggregate projection based on averages reported by surveyed members.
| Procedure (ASPS 2024) | Surgeon/physician fee range, USD |
|---|---|
| Breast augmentation (implants, primary and/or revision) | $4,575–$8,000 |
| Liposuction | $4,300–$7,500 |
| Breast lift (mastopexy) | $6,500–$11,000 |
| Buttock augmentation with fat grafting | $7,000–$11,500 |
| Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) | $7,500–$12,500 |
| Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) | $8,000–$13,500 |
These are fees for the surgeon. A US patient's total usually also includes the anesthesia provider, the operating facility, implants, lab work, prescriptions and compression garments, often on separate invoices. Before comparing a US number with a package from abroad, ask the US practice for an all-in written quote. If you are paying cash, also ask each billing provider for a Good Faith Estimate.

Why there is no matching table for Colombia, Mexico or Costa Rica
We looked for an equally reliable published benchmark for the three destination countries and did not find one we could verify. There is no national surgeon survey in a comparable format. Prices abroad are set by individual surgeons and clinics, and most published figures come from provider marketing, brokers or aggregator sites that mix procedures, years and package scopes.
That is why this page does not print a country-by-country price table. A single "Colombia price" for a tummy tuck can describe very different things: the surgeon alone, a clinic package with one night, or an all-inclusive offer with a recovery house and airport pickup. Treat any country average you see, including older versions of pages on this site, as a prompt to collect written quotes rather than as a number to plan around. The cosmetic surgery price index explains how to read such ranges with caution.
Converting a package quote into the US format
The fastest way to compare is to rewrite every quote, US or foreign, into the same set of rows. If a row is missing, write "unknown," not zero.
| Component | How US quotes usually show it | How packages abroad often show it | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surgeon fee | Separate line, matches the ASPS benchmark | Bundled into one price | Ask for the surgeon's share so you can check it against the benchmark. |
| Anesthesia | Separate bill, often time-based | Usually bundled | Who gives it: an anesthesiologist or another clinician? Is there a time limit? |
| Operating facility and nights | Separate facility bill | Bundled, with a set number of nights | Where exactly is the surgery done? What does an extra night cost? |
| Implants | Separate line or inside the facility fee | Often bundled, sometimes with a brand named | Manufacturer, model and size range. Do you get the device card? |
| Pre-op tests | Ordered and billed separately | Sometimes included, often done on arrival | What happens to the price if a test result delays surgery? |
| Garments, drains, medications | Usually extra | Varies | Itemize them. They add up during a long recovery. |
| Aftercare and recovery lodging | Rarely included | Sometimes included, often sold separately | Is it nursing care or just a room? How many nights? |
| Revision terms | Practice policy | Practice policy | Who pays for the facility and anesthesia if a revision is needed after you return home? |
A worked illustration
Illustrative only, not a price. Say you are comparing a tummy tuck. The midpoint of the ASPS 2024 surgeon-fee range is $10,750. That is your US surgeon line. Your US total is that figure plus whatever the practice quotes for anesthesia, the facility and supplies. Now suppose a package abroad gives one number. Ask what share of it is the surgeon's fee, how many nights it includes, and whether garments and post-op visits are inside it. Fill in the same rows for both quotes. Then add flights and the nights you will need before you are cleared to fly. Only the two completed totals can be compared. A package that looks cheaper with three "unknown" rows hasn't been shown to be cheaper yet.
The last row is often the most important. Our guide to revision surgery financial exposure explains why "free revision" usually covers only the surgeon's time.
How the three destinations differ, apart from price
Once quotes are in the same format, the choice between Colombia, Mexico and Costa Rica often comes down to factors that change the total cost but never appear on the surgeon's quote:
- Travel time from your city. A short, direct flight makes a second trip for follow-up or a revision cheaper and more realistic.
- Required stay. Some surgeons want you nearby for a set number of days before they clear you to fly. That number times your nightly cost is a real line.
- Follow-up at home. Will a local surgeon see you if something goes wrong after you return, and what would that visit cost? Ask before you travel, not after.
- Verification. How easily can you confirm the surgeon's training, specialty registration and where they have operating privileges?
None of these favors one country across the board. They depend on your home city, the procedure and the individual surgeon.
Recovery time is the hidden multiplier
For cosmetic surgery, the number of nights you need to stay often changes the total more than small differences between surgeon fees. Two rules from the CDC Yellow Book (2026 edition) set the minimum. Body procedures on the chest or abdomen mean no flight for 10 days. For facial, eyelid and nose procedures, the CDC passes on the ASPS recommendation of a 7–10 day wait. A tummy tuck is abdominal surgery, and combination procedures often involve both the chest and the abdomen.
The CDC lists the risks to plan for: infections, revisions for unsatisfactory results, blood clots, fat embolism, contour irregularities and wound separation. It also warns that vacation activities like drinking, strenuous exercise, sunbathing and long tours can delay healing. A plastic surgery trip is a recovery trip. Budget it that way.
Combination procedures: bigger savings on paper, more to plan
Packages often bundle two or three procedures in one session, which makes the savings look bigger. Combining procedures also means longer surgery and anesthesia, and possibly a longer stay or a different facility. Ask the surgeon how long the combined surgery will take, whether they would do it in one stage for you specifically, and what changes if they decide mid-plan to split it. The cost comparison of one stage versus two stages shows how a second trip changes the math.
Safety, legal recourse and why they affect cost
The US State Department's Colombia page (2025) is blunt. It says quality of care varies widely, that US citizens have suffered serious complications and even died after cosmetic or other elective surgery, and that you have limited legal options in case of malpractice. CDC adds that accreditation helps but does not guarantee a good outcome.
Financially, this means a complication abroad is mostly your cost to absorb. Your contingency reserve has to cover extra nights, a changed flight and possibly care at home. If the trip only works with a small reserve, it is fragile.
Taxes and financing
IRS Publication 502 (2025) says cosmetic surgery is generally not deductible as a medical expense. There are exceptions for surgery that corrects a deformity from a congenital abnormality, an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease. Most elective cosmetic trips are therefore paid with after-tax money. If you are financing, compare the total repayment, not just the monthly payment.
Frequently asked questions
Are the ASPS figures the full price of cosmetic surgery in the US?
No. The ASPS 2024 ranges are surgeon/physician fees. Anesthesia, the operating facility, implants, tests, medications and garments are usually billed on top, so ask a US practice for an all-in written quote before comparing.
Why does this page not list prices for Colombia, Mexico and Costa Rica?
We could not find a reputable, comparable published benchmark for those countries. Prices there are set surgeon by surgeon, and most published figures mix procedures, years and package scopes. Written quotes, rewritten into the same rows, are the reliable comparison.
How long should I stay after a tummy tuck abroad?
Your surgeon decides when you are cleared to fly. A tummy tuck is abdominal surgery, and the CDC Yellow Book's planning rule for that category is no flying for 10 days. Budget lodging for at least that long unless your surgeon gives you a different plan.
Is cosmetic surgery abroad tax-deductible?
Generally not. IRS Publication 502 (2025) excludes cosmetic surgery, except procedures that correct a deformity from a congenital abnormality, an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
Is Mexico or Costa Rica cheaper than Colombia for plastic surgery?
There is no reliable national comparison that answers this. Differences between individual surgeons and package scopes are usually larger than any country average. Compare written quotes for the same scope, then add travel time, required nights and follow-up for each.
