Why LASIK ads quote a number you probably won't pay
LASIK is elective, almost always paid out of pocket and heavily advertised. That pushes clinics on both sides of the border to lead with the lowest number they can defend. That number usually has conditions attached:
- Per eye, not per patient. Most people treat both eyes, so the real figure is at least double.
- Lowest prescription band. "From" prices often apply to mild nearsightedness without much astigmatism. Higher prescriptions move up a tier.
- Base technology. Flap creation method and treatment profile (for example, wavefront- or topography-guided treatment) are often priced as upgrades.
- Exam not included. The candidacy workup may be billed separately, and some patients turn out not to be candidates at all.
None of this is unique to Colombia. It's how elective refractive surgery is marketed in most places. A price-only comparison across countries therefore tends to set one clinic's floor against another clinic's typical price.
What the FDA tells patients to watch for
The FDA's patient guidance on LASIK is unusually direct about money. It advises patients to:
- Compare rather than settle on the first center or doctor, because results vary with the procedure, the laser and the surgeon's experience.
- Not decide on cost alone.
- Be wary of guarantees, including "20/20 or your money back" offers and package deals, because there are never guarantees in medicine.
- Read the laser manufacturer's patient handbook and ask the surgeon how their own results and complications compare with it.
- Be cautious of slick advertising and deals that seem too good to be true.
That guidance applies whether the clinic is in the US or abroad. If anything, it matters more when a trip is involved, because a follow-up problem is harder to fix from home.
The hidden variable is screening, not the laser
The laser is only one part of the price. What often differs more between a cheap quote and a careful one is the candidacy exam: corneal mapping and thickness measurement, a check that your prescription is stable, an assessment of dry eye and the ocular surface, and a surgeon who reviews the results before agreeing to operate.
The FDA lists risks that good screening is meant to reduce. They include lost lines of vision that can't be corrected, glare, halos or double vision at night, under- or over-correction, and severe dry eye that may be permanent. It also notes that results are generally less good for large refractive errors. A clinic that prices aggressively and screens briefly is selling the risk along with the procedure. You just don't see that on the price list.
LASIK, PRK and SMILE are not one price
Advertisements often use "laser eye surgery" for several different procedures. LASIK creates a corneal flap, PRK treats the surface of the cornea without one, and SMILE works through a small incision. Recovery differs between them, so ask your surgeon how. Each uses different equipment and has its own suitability criteria, so a quote for one isn't a quote for another. If a clinic recommends switching procedures after your exam, ask for a new written price, not a verbal "about the same."
What retreatment terms are really worth
Some patients need a second treatment, often called an enhancement. The FDA notes that few patients reach 20/20 without glasses and that retreatment isn't always possible. Clinics handle this in very different ways:
- Free enhancement for a fixed period, sometimes only if specific conditions are met.
- Discounted enhancement.
- No enhancement policy; any further treatment is billed at standard rates.
For an international patient, even a "free" enhancement isn't free. It may mean a second flight and more nights away. When you compare a Colombian quote with a US one, price the enhancement as travel plus any fee, weighted by how likely your surgeon thinks you are to need it.
How a trip to Colombia changes the comparison
LASIK is short compared with most procedures people travel for, and that's the main reason it can work as a trip. Still, a few trip-specific costs belong in the comparison:
- Days on the ground. Include time for the exam, the procedure and the early post-op checks your surgeon schedules. Ask for the full visit schedule in writing.
- Both eyes on the same day. Travel often pushes patients toward treating both eyes in one session. The FDA notes that same-day treatment of both eyes carries more risk than separate procedures. Discuss this with your surgeon rather than letting your flight schedule decide.
- Later follow-up at home. Find an optometrist or ophthalmologist who'll see you after you return, and find out what they charge.
- Currency. If the quote is in Colombian pesos, the dollar cost moves until you pay. See our guide to COP exchange rates and quote expiry.
Normalize the two quotes before you compare them
| Line | What the cheapest ad usually assumes | What your quote should state |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes treated | One eye | Both eyes, total price |
| Prescription | Mild, low astigmatism | Your measured prescription and the price tier it falls in |
| Procedure | "Laser eye surgery" | LASIK, PRK or SMILE, named |
| Technology | Base profile | Laser platform and treatment type |
| Candidacy exam | Not mentioned | Included or separate, and the fee if you're declined |
| Medications | Not mentioned | Post-op drops included or not |
| Follow-up | "Included" | Number of visits and over what period |
| Enhancement | "Lifetime" or unstated | Written conditions, time limit and any fees |
| Trip costs | Excluded | Your own estimate of nights, flights and a possible second trip |
Once both quotes are on the same basis, the remaining gap is the real saving. For the full line-by-line LASIK cost structure, see our LASIK cost breakdown for the USA and Colombia. For a method that works with any procedure, see three quotes, one normalized total.
Questions to ask before paying a deposit
- Who is the operating surgeon, and will the same person do my exam and follow-up?
- Which laser platform will be used, and can I see its patient information?
- What exactly does the exam include, and what happens to my deposit if I'm not a candidate?
- Is the price for both eyes, in which currency, and for how long is it valid?
- How many follow-up visits are included, over what period, and what do later visits cost?
- What are the written enhancement terms, and do they need me to return within a set time?
When the cheapest quote is the right one
A low price isn't automatically a warning sign. Lower labor and facility costs can produce real savings. A quote is reasonable to choose when it names the surgeon and the laser, includes a full candidacy exam, puts the follow-up schedule and enhancement terms in writing, and still costs less once your trip is added. If it only wins while those lines stay blank, it hasn't really won.
Frequently asked questions
Why are LASIK prices quoted per eye?
Per-eye pricing makes the headline number look smaller, and it lets clinics price each eye's prescription separately. Most patients treat both eyes, so ask for a total price for both.
Does the FDA say anything about cheap LASIK deals?
Yes. FDA patient guidance advises comparing providers, not deciding on cost alone, and being wary of package deals, money-back promises and advertising that seems too good to be true.
Is it safe to have both eyes done on the same day before flying home?
The FDA notes that treating both eyes on the same day carries more risk than separate procedures. That decision should be made with your surgeon based on your eyes, not on your flight schedule.
What should a complete LASIK quote include?
Both eyes, the named procedure and laser platform, the candidacy exam, post-op medications, the number of follow-up visits, and written enhancement terms. Add your own estimate of trip costs if you'll be travelling.
Is an enhancement free if the clinic promises one?
The procedure fee may be waived, but conditions and time limits often apply. For an international patient, a second treatment can also mean another flight and more nights abroad, so count those in.
